Tony began his playing career with the local town brass band in Clackmannanshire at the age of 11. He performed many concerts and competitions, including live radio broadcasts and participated in tours with bands and orchestras.
Tony studied at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and became heavily involved in the music scene, performing professionally with big bands, orchestras, pop and military bands, as well as at the commonwealth games and many of the major concert halls in the UK and abroad. He returned to study performance and conducting at Huddersfield University, then a PGCE at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Tony’s background is mainly as a secondary classroom teacher and Head of Department/Faculty and he is still a busy performer, working regularly with many of the UK's top ensembles and taking part in recording and session engagements.
Tony joined Calderdale Music Trust (formerly Calderdale Music Service) in 2012 and, as well as his brass specialism, enjoys teaching a variety of other instruments including woodwind, piano, keyboard and theory.
