Transforming And Enriching Lives Through Music

Suzanne Smelt

Suzanne picked up a recorder at St Andrew's Junior School in Ashton, Preston, and has rarely been without music in her life since then! She was a member of the local church choir for 10 years (gaining RSCM awards for singing) and joined the Preston Cecilian Choral Society in her late teens.

It was as a result of lessons received through Lancashire School Music Service that she developed her clarinet playing and progressed to study the clarinet, and piano, at Huddersfield Polytechnic, with tutors Howard Rogerson and Prabhu Singh.  She pursued a teaching career in secondary schools after gaining a PGCE at Leeds University.  Suzanne also received singing lessons from Jean Allister and Val Baulard and has sung as a soloist in oratorio performances and has taken part in chamber choir items for BBC Radio 4's Daily Service.

She reached the post of Director of Music at The Blue Coat School, Oldham in 2002. During her teaching career Suzanne successfully entered choirs for music festivals, such as The Mrs. Sunderland Music Festival and trained school choirs to take part in 'My Favourite Hymns' (Granada TV) and for 'Stars in Their Eyes' (Granada TV). She directed the music in several school musicals such as Grease.

Suzanne currently works with Calderdale Music Trust, teaching music in the local area. She founded The Outlane Singers in 2008, which goes from strength to strength, and enjoyed singing in the Huddersfield Choral Society for 20 years.  She has been musical director of The Longwood Sing since 2012. She regularly accompanies choirs, occasionally plays the organ at church, sometimes writes concert reviews for The Huddersfield Examiner, helps to organise church events, and in her spare time (!) enjoys swimming, in 2015 having completed a two mile swim in Lake Windermere!
