Sally comes from a musical family and started to learn violin and piano at the age of 7. Later she played violin in the West Riding Youth Orchestra and was a founder member of the Calderdale Youth Orchestra in 1974.
Sally studied music at Hull University, graduating with a BA Hons degree and, the following year, completed a PGCE at St. John’s College York, specialising in Primary Music.
Sally worked as a full-time violin teacher for ten years with the Cleveland Music Service and played violin in the Teesside Symphony Orchestra and the Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra. Sally moved back to Calderdale and worked with the Adult Education Service, running Parent and Toddler music classes across the Authority for nine years. In 1994 she started working part time for Calderdale Music Service. Here she was able to expand her music teaching skills, taking on piano teaching, whole class curriculum music from Reception to Year 6, and First Access whole class violin teaching.
Sally enjoys her job and is enthusiastic about music education and developing children musically. She also finds time for her own musical development by playing violin in the Todmorden Orchestra and the Orchestra of Square Chapel, and singing with the Halifax Choral Society.
