Iain was born in Dundee, Scotland into a musical family, so making music was all that he wanted to do from an early age. He first began to learn the trumpet in school aged seven, before joining his local brass band Dundee Instrumental on cornet at the age of ten. Iain went on to play principal cornet with several of Scotland’s top bands, also including the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland. Many solo competitions were won along the way - including the junior section at the British Open Solo Championships at age eleven, allowing him to receive cornet lessons from Dr Roger Webster from the age of 12
Some years later Iain took the advice of teacher David James and moved south to study music at the University of Salford under the tutorage of professor David King, where his playing really began to blossom. In 2009 Iain was the recipient of a prestigious Dewar Arts award, awarded for performance in trumpet, allowing him to complete his postgraduate studies at the university of Salford.
Iain has held the position of principal cornet with many of the UK’s leading brass bands including Sellers International, YBS, Carlton Main, The Fairey Band, and The Leyland Band. He has enjoyed many successful contest and concert performances, and has established a reputation as one of the finest cornet soloists of his generation, touring as a soloist and teacher as far afield as the USA, Norway, Switzerland, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Japan. In 2012 Iain released his debut solo CD "Vanguard" which was met with great critical acclaim, being nominated for solo CD of the year by both the British Bandsman and 4barsrest.com. Iain spent the last two years playing principal cornet with the world famous Grimethorpe Colliery Band, touring Australia with them in the summer of 2015 before moving on to focus on orchestral playing and further developing his career as a soloist and conductor. Iain is an artist for Besson and buffet group instruments.
