Helen began learning the violin in primary school where she benefitted from group lessons provided by Rochdale Music Service. From there she went onto study music at the University of Manchester and then to complete a PGCE at Manchester Metropolitan University.

She has over 15 years’ experience teaching music in secondary schools, both as a classroom teacher and Head of Music and in a range of educational settings from rural schools to inner-city schools. During her career so far she has fulfilled a wide range of extension roles including examiner for A Level Music Technology, research panellist for BBC GCSE Bitesize, and has had a school choir featured in a BBC Radio 4 play. As well as the violin, she also plays the piano and sings. She has both sung in and directed local community choirs and currently plays violin with the Todmorden Orchestra.
